The New York Knicks have appointed Ed Flynn as their new replay specialist, a role critical for making swift challenge decisions during games. Flynn joins the team as assistant coach for special situations, a position that involves analyzing real-time video replays and advising head coach Mike Brown on when to initiate reviews.

Flynn brings three seasons of experience as the Pelicans' video coordinator, having joined New Orleans in 2023 before departing amid a coaching staff overhaul following the hiring of head coach Jamahl Mosley. Prior to that, Flynn held roles as a video intern and coordinator with the Hornets and worked as a graduate assistant at the University of Miami. At 6-foot-10, he played collegiate basketball at Williams College in Massachusetts.

The role Flynn fills is often high-pressure and highly scrutinized, as decisions to challenge can directly influence game outcomes. The position was previously held by Jordan Brink for two seasons. Brink was noted for a strong track record of successful challenges, including one that helped the Knicks secure a crucial moment in Game 2 of the recent NBA Finals victory. Following the expiration of his contract with New York, Brink accepted an assistant coaching job with the Chicago Bulls under new head coach Tiago Splitter, viewed within the league as a promotion.

Before Brink, the Knicks utilized Scott King and Darren Erman in similar capacities. The current coaching staff remains largely intact, with assistants Chris Jent, Rick Brunson, Brendan O’Connor, and Erman continuing with the team. Additionally, player development specialists Kwadzo Ahelegbe and Peter Patton have received commendations from players and are expected to remain part of the organization.

Flynn’s appointment reflects the Knicks’ continued emphasis on leveraging technology and video analysis to gain competitive advantages during games, particularly in the strategic use of challenges. His experience and background position him to take on the responsibilities of managing replay reviews and contributing to the team’s in-game tactical decisions.
