Wayne Knight’s journey from an unheralded high school recruit to a standout running back at UCLA underscores a story of perseverance and adaptation in college football. Initially a zero-star recruit with no Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) offers, Knight had committed to Stony Brook before receiving a late opportunity to join James Madison University (JMU) under coach Curt Cignetti just days before signing day.
In his freshman year at JMU, Knight played sparingly, contributing as a running back and on special teams. However, early in the 2023 season, his role diminished to predominantly kickoff duties. Frustrated by limited playing time and denied a change in role, Knight made the difficult decision to step away from the team to redshirt his sophomore year and preserve eligibility, subsequently entering the transfer portal.
Despite these challenges, Knight hoped to continue at JMU under new head coach Bob Chesney, who replaced Cignetti after the 2023 season. With support from his brother Yamir, a former JMU receiver, Knight approached Chesney and was welcomed back into the program. Chesney described Knight as determined to contribute more to the team and avoid wasting a season, and was open with the siblings about the prospects upon his return.
During his time back with the Dukes, Knight was mentored by former JMU running backs coach David Sims Jr., who had previously recruited him out of high school. Sims praised Knight’s combination of quickness, speed, and power, characteristics that suited him well as a running back. Though early in his return Knight struggled to showcase his abilities due to insufficient blocking, injuries to teammates eventually elevated him on the depth chart. Knight responded by becoming the team’s leading rusher, totaling 1,373 yards and nine touchdowns in the 2025 season.
Knight’s progression continued after transferring to UCLA, where he faced competition from established veterans but brought with him a resilient mindset. His high school coach, Michael Judy of Smyrna High, noted Knight’s refusal to be discouraged by doubts from others, emphasizing his strong work ethic and leadership qualities. Judy also highlighted Knight’s positive impact off the field, recalling how young fans waited in the rain to get his autograph following a game against Maryland and expressing pride in Knight’s character and accomplishments.
As Knight’s college career advances, his story reflects not just athletic success but also the determination and support systems that helped him overcome early setbacks and seize second chances at the Division I level.
