Two emerging talents from the Northern Knights have risen to prominence as potential first-round picks in the upcoming AFL draft, defying earlier expectations. Toby Krasna and Harvie Cooke, who had previously been overlooked for key representative opportunities, have both drawn significant interest from recruiters following strong performances throughout the 2026 season and at the national draft combine held this month.

Neither player was selected for Victoria Metro’s under-16 squad in 2024, nor did they feature in the under-17 Futures match last September. However, their development this year has placed them firmly among the top 30 prospects for the draft scheduled next month.

Krasna, standing 181 centimeters tall, showcased versatility primarily on the wing this season while also demonstrating capability inside the midfield. Northern Knights coach Anthony Rocca highlighted Krasna’s rapid progression, noting that his combination of speed, agility, and decision-making has markedly improved. “If you would have told me two and a half years ago that Toby Krasna was going to be a first-round pick, I’d probably laugh at you,” Rocca said. “But his growth has been immense. We saw elements of it last year playing as a wing, where you could just see the speed and agility and the ability to get through traffic was there. He put it all together this year playing wing and midfield. His decision-making with ball in hand is very, very good.”

Cooke, who measures 176 centimeters, took on roles both forward and in the midfield throughout the season. Described as a creative player with a strong competitive edge, Cooke has been praised for his relentless contest work inside and his effectiveness pushing forward. Rocca credited Cooke’s consistent preparation and performance with his recognition, including a successful showing at the Vic Metro championships and subsequent All-Australian selection. “Everything has just come off the back of consistent training, consistent game-day preparation and just performing from week to week,” Rocca said.

Their physical conditioning was further validated at the national draft combine, where Cooke recorded a noteworthy fifth-place finish in the 2-kilometer time trial, clocking 6 minutes and 8 seconds. Krasna was close behind, finishing seventh with a time of 6 minutes and 11 seconds.

These developments mark a significant leap for both players, who now stand as strong candidates for high selections in the AFL draft, reflecting their impressive progression and on-field contributions throughout the year.
