Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) has upgraded its technological infrastructure across its three refineries—Abdullah, Ahmadi, and Zour—to enhance operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact, according to sources familiar with the developments.

The Mina Abdullah refinery has already seen the introduction of a “Digital Operator Monitoring” system, deployed by KNPC's Information Technology Department. This initiative has delivered cost savings exceeding KD1 million, with anticipated annual savings surpassing KD650,000. Officials indicated that once the program demonstrates improved data collection capabilities and delivers high-precision analyses in field operations, it will be extended to the Ahmadi and Zour refineries.

At the Zour refinery, KNPC has incorporated a digital prevention system aimed at minimizing operational risks and preventing equipment malfunctions. This move follows a series of disruptions last year that caused a 3 percent decline in refining throughput. The new system enhances detection of corrosion and other equipment deterioration issues not visible to the naked eye, thereby supporting more proactive maintenance and increased production reliability.

The company is also strengthening its corrosion defense mechanisms as part of a broader strategy to maintain its position among the world’s most advanced refinery operations.

An official report obtained by media outlets revealed that Zour refinery has transitioned from traditional fuel gas to liquefied natural gas (LNG) for its fuel needs, utilizing nitrogen to eliminate fuel gas flaring within the flare collection line. This switch is projected to cut annual carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 8,380 tons, contributing to the company’s environmental sustainability goals.

Additionally, the report noted that comprehensive cleaning operations were recently completed on all four types of crude oil supply lines feeding the refineries. These efforts were executed with detailed planning and coordination among internal and external stakeholders to ensure the optimal performance of the supply infrastructure.

These steps reflect KNPC’s broader commitment to integrating advanced digital technologies and environmentally friendly practices to improve refinery efficiency and reduce the environmental footprint of its operations across Kuwait.
