By mid-2026, the Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) experienced a record increase in its workforce, surpassing 7,650 employees amid ongoing expansion and restructuring efforts. This growth reflects a strategic transformation within Kuwait’s oil sector aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and reinforcing national employment.
According to company data, the overall workforce size rose significantly over the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026. The annual report indicated an increase to 6,441 employees as of that date, up from 6,405 at the close of the previous fiscal year. This figure includes staff from the Kuwait Aviation Fuelling Company (KAFCO). By mid-2026, the total workforce had further expanded to over 7,650, driven primarily by recent mergers and integration steps within the sector.
A key factor behind this surge has been the implementation of comprehensive restructuring plans designed to unify operations under a single system. This includes the transfer of the Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company (KIPIC), as well as the Shuaiba and Umm Al-Aish gas plants, to KNPC’s authority. These moves are intended to streamline operations, reduce duplication, and improve productivity across critical energy facilities.
The company’s commitment to the Kuwaitization policy was also evident during the recent fiscal year. It added 171 new Kuwaiti employees, bringing the total number of national workers to 5,979, or 92.82 percent of the entire workforce including KAFCO personnel. The emphasis on hiring Kuwaiti citizens aligns with a broader goal of empowering national talent and securing the country’s economic and energy sovereignty.
According to a KNPC source, the integration strategy goes beyond administrative realignment. It is a deliberate approach to optimize human resources, create a collaborative environment, and prepare the company to address future challenges in the global energy market with greater flexibility and resilience.
The expanded workforce is seen as essential to sustaining the company’s leadership regionally and internationally. National engineers and technical staff play a vital role in transferring technical knowledge, localizing expertise, and managing advanced refinery operations and environmental initiatives. Their involvement supports ongoing innovation and sustainability efforts within Kuwait’s vital oil sector.
These developments underscore KNPC’s pivotal role in maintaining Kuwait’s economic stability by managing oil resources through a highly skilled national workforce. The company’s expansion and restructuring efforts reflect an emphasis on both operational excellence and the development of Kuwaiti professionals to lead the industry’s future growth.
