West Ham defender Konstantinos Mavropanos has emerged as a key offensive contributor for the club as it seeks promotion back to the Premier League. The 28-year-old Greece international has scored four goals so far this season, marking the most prolific scoring streak of his career. His strong performances in September earned him the Sky Bet Championship player of the month award, alongside manager Nuno Espirito Santo, who was named manager of the month.

Mavropanos, known primarily for his defensive capabilities, has made a notable impact on set-pieces, attributing much of his recent success to the quality of deliveries and precise timing in the box. “Right now, everything goes right with set-pieces,” he said. “It’s an aspect of the game we work hard on. I try to get the best out of it because I know how good the deliveries are.” His aerial presence and physicality have made him a significant scoring threat in the Championship.

Reflecting on the challenges he has faced throughout his career, Mavropanos identified Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski as the most formidable strikers he has defended against in the Premier League, Bundesliga, and international play. “As a defender, I don’t want my opponent to score. But with those two, you have to be focused for every single minute because they always find a way,” he said.

Despite his scoring form, Mavropanos downplayed any suggestion of a permanent shift toward goal-scoring, emphasizing that strikers typically have more opportunities. “No, the strikers know already! They are going to score more than me because they get more chances,” he said. “I don’t want to make people think I’m going to score ten or 15 goals—although a 1-0 win with me scoring the winner is always nice.”

Last season, despite winning West Ham’s Hammer of the Year award, Mavropanos experienced the disappointment of relegation. His commitment to the club remained strong, highlighting the support from fans as motivation for the team’s push for immediate promotion. “The fans are always supporting us. I want to give back to them,” he stated. “The Championship is competitive and played at a high level. We know what we have to do.”

In addition to club duties, Mavropanos has managed a demanding schedule that includes international play for Greece. After participating in four matches over ten days for his national team, including a standout performance in a 1-0 victory over Germany, he returned to West Ham focused on recovery. Eschewing modern technology and analytics, he relies on listening to his body to maintain fitness. “I’m not that crazy with technology or how deep I sleep. I just listen to my body,” he explained.

West Ham will look to maintain their positive momentum when they host London rivals Queens Park Rangers, with both Mavropanos and Espirito Santo eager to build on a strong start to the season.
