Liverpool striker Lewis Koumas has drawn praise from Wales teammate Neco Williams following an encouraging performance in Wales’ narrow 1-0 defeat to Portugal in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday. The match took place at Lisbon’s Jose Alvalade Stadium and saw Wales, missing several regular players due to injury, hold their own against one of Europe’s top teams.
Koumas, who celebrated his 21st birthday last week, led the Welsh forward line and impressed despite the loss. Williams highlighted Koumas’ ongoing development, citing the striker’s growing confidence and work ethic. “His confidence is growing each game. The more games he plays, the older he gets, the more experience he gets, he’ll become better and better,” Williams said. “He’s a work horse, he doesn’t stop working, and they’re the type of players you want in your team.”
After gaining experience through loan spells at Championship clubs Stoke City, Birmingham City, and Hull City, Koumas has broken into Liverpool’s first team under new manager Andoni Iraola this season. He has made his Premier League and Champions League debuts and was named player of the match in Liverpool’s recent Carabao Cup win over Tottenham Hotspur. His progression with both club and country has attracted attention and optimism.
Wales’ defeat came from a deflected first-half goal by Portugal’s Joao Felix. The Welsh side created several opportunities to equalize late in the game, including a Brennan Johnson effort that hit the crossbar, and rebounds that Daniel James and Koumas were unable to convert. Kieffer Moore also provided crosses narrowly missed by teammates. Williams acknowledged the frustration of not capitalizing on those chances but stressed the positives from the performance against a formidable opponent. “Portugal are one of the best sides in the world, and it was a performance to be happy with,” he said.
Wales now face Denmark in their next Nations League Group A4 match, scheduled for Sunday in Copenhagen. Both teams are still seeking their first points in the group after Denmark’s 3-2 loss to Norway earlier in the week. Williams emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and securing a victory. “It’s the same focus, just go and get the three points. We’ve showed that we can do it against the top nations. As soon as we get that final end product right then that’s happening.”
Williams also spoke about the significance of squad depth for Wales, highlighting the role of younger players coming through as crucial for future success. “It’s a team game and it’s important to have a big squad, not just 11 players on the pitch and, supporting that, the younger players coming up if they’re either on the bench or being part of the team. It’s a good experience for them because we’re going to need them in the future.”
