In 2021, Kristina DeMichele, a 31-year-old digital content strategist for Harvard Magazine, purchased a two-bedroom bungalow in Melrose, Massachusetts, marking a significant milestone as a single homeowner. While she enjoyed personalizing her new space and even considered adopting a golden retriever, DeMichele envisioned selling the house within five years to make room for a future family.

For years, DeMichele actively pursued a serious relationship through dating apps, seeking a partner who was warm, attentive, and compatible. However, she found the process tiring and ultimately unsuccessful. Across nearby Woburn, Andy Donato, 36, was experiencing similar frustrations. After multiple attempts at dating apps, he decided to take a break at the end of 2022 but had one last date planned.

That date took place shortly after Thanksgiving at Cibo Cafe in Wakefield, where DeMichele and Donato met in person for the first time after connecting on Bumble. Both recalled an immediate and notable connection marked by genuine conversation and a positive energy. DeMichele, who moved to Boston from Dublin, Ohio, in 2013 to attend Emerson College, described Donato as having a “sunshine yellow energy,” while Donato appreciated DeMichele’s clarity about her intentions, which helped set the stage for what they both hoped would become a meaningful partnership.

Toward the end of the coffee date, Donato revealed he planned to adopt a golden retriever puppy the following day—a prospect that did not deter DeMichele. Two days later, she returned to Donato’s home with pizza to meet the 4-month-old puppy, Minfilia—nicknamed Minnie—a dog Donato had named after a character from the video game Final Fantasy XIV. Their evening culminated with their first kiss, initiated by DeMichele.

Following that introduction, Donato brought Minnie to DeMichele’s Melrose home to assist with putting up her Christmas tree. This visit further solidified their bond, as DeMichele observed Donato’s gentle and attentive nature toward Minnie, reinforcing her desire to find a partner who could potentially be a good father to her future children.

The relationship quickly grew, with the couple spending more time together and enjoying shared meals after work. Both appeared optimistic about their future, blending their lives around a shared love of family and, now, their dog Minnie.
