Sarawak is advancing its digital transformation efforts by developing the Kuching AI Data Campus at Tanjung Embang, state Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg announced on Tuesday. The initiative aims to position the state as a leading hub for artificial intelligence (AI) innovation, boosting economic growth and creating new value sectors.

The Kuching AI Data Campus will be established through a public-private partnership and will feature dedicated infrastructure, including power and water supplies, AI computing resources, and enhanced digital connectivity. The campus is expected to serve as the physical foundation for Sarawak’s AI Grid, a network designed to connect computing resources and leverage the state’s renewable energy capacity.

Abang Johari emphasized the campus's role in attracting investment, strengthening the local data center ecosystem, and nurturing AI-related businesses and capabilities. The development forms part of Sarawak’s broader AI strategy, supported by the Sarawak Artificial Intelligence Centre (SAIC) and the ongoing formulation of the Sarawak AI Blueprint 2026-2030.

SAIC, according to the premier, is central to advancing AI development by integrating capabilities, talent, applications, and trusted infrastructure. The Sarawak AI Blueprint aims to provide a coordinated framework involving government agencies, industries, academia, and research institutions to guide AI progress across the state.

“These initiatives mark a transition from strategic planning to tangible infrastructure and application, focusing on responsible AI adoption aligned with Sarawak’s priorities,” Abang Johari said during his remarks at the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak 2026 in Kuching.

In conjunction with the AI announcements, the premier also unveiled the Sarawak Cybersecurity Strategy and Roadmap 2030. Developed by the Sarawak Multimedia Authority, this five-year roadmap comprises 18 initiatives focused on enhancing the state’s cybersecurity capabilities, resilience, and digital trust.

The strategy is organized around five key pillars: securing strategic information assets, protecting people and businesses, talent development and capacity building, strengthening governance and operational frameworks, and fostering strategic collaboration and cooperation.

Together, these efforts underscore Sarawak’s commitment to strengthening its digital economy through innovation, security, and sustainable infrastructure development.
