The Kuwaiti Cabinet approved a draft decree-law on Tuesday aimed at regulating the media sector amid ongoing digital and technological advancements worldwide. The decision was made during the Cabinet’s weekly meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. The proposed legislation seeks to address various aspects related to publishing, digital advertising, and social media activities. The draft law has been forwarded to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for final approval.
In addition to media regulation, the Cabinet approved a draft decree-law concerning governmental sukuk, which was also submitted to the Amir for ratification.
The session included briefings on several diplomatic communications and developments. A letter from Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, Chairman of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, was conveyed to the Amir by Yemeni Foreign Minister Afrah Al-Zouba. The correspondence emphasized the fraternal ties between Kuwait and Yemen and sought to enhance cooperation across diverse sectors.
Further, the Cabinet reviewed a letter sent by the Amir to South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, focusing on bilateral relations and the importance of strengthening cooperation amid evolving regional dynamics. This message was delivered in Seoul by Kuwait’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah during official talks with his South Korean counterpart Cho Hyun. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to advancing mutual interests through enhanced coordination.
Similarly, the Cabinet was updated on the Amir’s communication with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, highlighting historical ties between Kuwait and Japan and exploring avenues for deeper partnership. Sheikh Jarrah also handed over the message during his official visit to Tokyo.
Moreover, the Cabinet noted an invitation extended to Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah by UAE Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al-Maktoum to attend the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Summit.
Addressing regional security concerns, the Cabinet condemned recent drone attacks attributed to Iran against the United Arab Emirates, describing them as violations of sovereignty and threats to regional stability. Kuwait reiterated its full support for the UAE’s measures to protect its territorial integrity. Similarly, Kuwait denounced Iranian missile attacks on Jordan, emphasizing solidarity with Jordan in safeguarding its security.
The meeting also covered Kuwaiti Defense Minister Sheikh Abdullah Ali Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah’s recent visit to Pakistan, where a joint defense and military cooperation agreement was signed with Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif. The pact aims to enhance operational coordination, expertise exchange, and readiness between the Kuwaiti and Pakistani armed forces, contributing to regional stability.
Sheikh Jarrah briefed the Cabinet on his diplomatic activities, including his official visits to China, South Korea, and Japan. In Beijing, he met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng and conveyed greetings from Kuwait’s leadership to top Chinese officials. Discussions included the longstanding bilateral relationship and prospects for expanding strategic cooperation.
During his visit to South Korea, Sheikh Jarrah engaged with National Security Advisor Wi Sung-lac to review regional developments and efforts to reduce tensions, alongside meetings with former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to exchange views on international affairs. In Tokyo, he met with Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, discussing the elevation of Kuwait-Japan relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership and marking the 56th anniversary of diplomatic ties.
Lastly, the foreign minister reported on recent calls with foreign ministers of friendly and sisterly states, focusing on ongoing regional developments and diplomatic endeavors aimed at de-escalation, enhancing security, and ensuring safe maritime navigation.
