Kuwait has called for a balanced and comprehensive approach to migration policies that respect state sovereignty and international obligations while safeguarding the rights and dignity of migrants, with particular attention to vulnerable groups such as women and children. The remarks were made during the 92nd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday.
Ahmed Salmeen, Third Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Kuwait to the United Nations in Geneva, delivered the statement during an interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants. Salmeen emphasized Kuwait’s support for the Special Rapporteur’s report, which focuses on enhancing protections for migrants and upholding human dignity within the framework of international law and human rights standards.
The Kuwaiti delegation also aligned itself with the statements issued on behalf of various groups it represents. Salmeen highlighted the need for increased international cooperation to address the root causes of irregular migration, including armed conflicts and humanitarian crises. He reaffirmed Kuwait’s commitment to relevant international conventions and expressed support for humanitarian and development initiatives aimed at assisting populations affected by crises and disasters.
“These efforts reflect Kuwait’s belief in the importance of international solidarity in addressing the conditions that force people to flee their homes and seek safety and opportunities elsewhere,” Salmeen said.
In addition to advocating for stronger global collaboration, Kuwait underscored the necessity of practical mechanisms to balance effective border management with the protection of migrants’ rights. The delegation called for shared responsibility among states in managing migration flows and sought further clarification on measures to enhance international cooperation, ensuring that humanitarian considerations and human rights remain central to migration policies worldwide.
