Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah highlighted the critical role of the Group of 77 (G77) ministerial meeting as the international community faces mounting global challenges. Speaking on September 26 at the United Nations headquarters in New York during the 50th annual G77 meeting, held alongside the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Sheikh Jarrah underscored the urgency of coordinated global efforts to address economic, climate, and security issues beyond conflict zones that threaten sustainable development goals.
Sheikh Jarrah called for continued implementation of the Seville Commitment, which advocates for a more just and inclusive international financial system responsive to the diverse needs and development priorities of emerging economies. Key elements of the commitment include enhancing access to development and climate financing, facilitating technology transfer, and bridging the digital divide. The minister emphasized the necessity of respecting the varied national circumstances of states to ensure fair treatment and equity within the global system.
Addressing regional developments, Sheikh Jarrah condemned a series of attacks on Kuwait that began on February 28, 2026, which he said targeted critical civilian infrastructure and violated Kuwait’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the principles upheld by the UN Charter. He reaffirmed that Kuwait remains uninvolved in any conflict and has not allowed its territory, airspace, or waters to be used for hostile actions against other countries. The Foreign Minister called for an immediate and unconditional halt to these attacks, urging respect for the sovereignty of regional states in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2817 of 2026. The Resolution demands an immediate cessation of hostilities and strongly supports freedom of navigation.
Sheikh Jarrah also voiced Kuwait’s support for ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at enhancing regional security and stability. He advocated for durable regional understandings rooted in principles of good-neighborliness, respect for sovereignty, non-interference, and the rejection of force or threats thereof. Highlighting security concerns, he referenced issues related to Iran’s nuclear program, as well as developments involving ballistic missiles and drone technology.
In a separate statement, Sheikh Jarrah condemned any actions that compromise international navigation through the strategically vital Straits of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb, stressing the importance of ensuring safe and unimpeded passage in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Concluding his remarks, the minister reaffirmed Kuwait’s dedication to strengthening the collective voice of the Global South and championing the rights of its member states to development, security, and prosperity.
