Kuwait and the Czech Republic have announced plans to deepen their cooperation across several key sectors, including defense, economic trade, and investment. The announcement came during a reception held on October 20 in Kuwait City to mark the Czech Republic’s National Day, attended by senior Kuwaiti officials including Assistant Foreign Minister for European Affairs Najeeb Al-Bader and Minister of State for Communications Affairs and acting Minister of Information and Culture Omar Al-Omar.
Al-Bader emphasized Kuwait’s eagerness to expand bilateral relations with the Czech Republic, highlighting the mutual interest in exploring new opportunities that serve both countries. He noted the importance of intensifying political consultations and fostering dialogue not only bilaterally but also at regional and international levels to promote security and stability amid ongoing regional challenges.
The two nations recently convened the fifth round of their Political Cooperation Committee in Prague, where agreements were reached on several pending matters expected to be implemented in the near future. Al-Bader pointed to the continued regularity of high-level visits between Kuwait and the Czech Republic, despite recent regional developments that have caused some delays without hindering overall communication.
Regarding defense collaboration, both sides underscored an ongoing partnership covering multiple areas. Al-Bader described Czech defense capabilities as advanced, having observed these firsthand during a recent Kuwaiti delegation’s visit to Prague. The cooperation between the two countries in defense has historical roots, with the Czech Republic’s involvement in Operation Desert Storm being cited as an early foundation for security collaboration.
Czech Ambassador to Kuwait Juraj Chmiel reaffirmed the strength and resilience of bilateral ties, noting that the diplomacy between the countries goes beyond politics to include expanding economic cooperation and investment ventures that generate mutual benefits. He also expressed condolences to Kuwait for the Iranian-linked attacks the country faced earlier in the year, conveying solidarity on behalf of the Czech government and people.
Chmiel spoke about aspirations to enhance tourism links through the establishment of direct flights between Kuwait and the Czech Republic on a year-round basis. Currently, direct flights operate seasonally, with Jazeera Airways set to begin winter services this year. The ambassador described his efforts to extend these flights throughout the calendar year as part of broader efforts to strengthen people-to-people connections and economic exchange.
The event also commemorated the anniversary of the founding of independent Czechoslovakia in October 1918. Despite the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993, the celebration remains a significant occasion marking historical statehood and national identity. Ambassador Chmiel paid tribute to key historical figures such as Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, Milan Rastislav Štefánik, and Edvard Beneš, honoring their role in shaping Czechoslovakia’s independent future.
Overall, officials on both sides expressed optimism that the coming period will witness new initiatives and achievements, reinforcing the comprehensive partnership between Kuwait and the Czech Republic amid a complex geopolitical environment.
