Kuwait’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, Sheikh Fahad Yousef Saud Al-Sabah, announced the imminent reopening of the Abdaly border crossing between Kuwait and Iraq, expected to resume passenger and commercial traffic within 48 hours. The announcement was made during Sheikh Fahad’s visit to Basra on Saturday, where he held a joint press conference alongside Basra Governor Asaad Al-Eidani.

The reopening marks a significant step in restoring movement and trade across the border, which had been disrupted in recent weeks. Sheikh Fahad emphasized the strong and enduring ties between Kuwait and Iraq, describing the relationship as “unshakeable” despite recent regional tensions.

During the visit, Sheikh Fahad and Governor Al-Eidani discussed multiple issues of mutual interest, including the latest security developments in the region. They focused on enhancing security coordination aimed at protecting the shared border and promoting cooperation under the framework of the longstanding fraternal relationship between the two countries.

Sheikh Fahad also conducted an inspection of the Abdaly border crossing, where he was briefed on the extent of damage caused by recent hostilities involving Iranian forces. The Kuwaiti minister instructed the relevant authorities to promptly assess and repair the damage in order to facilitate the swift reopening of the crossing and to resume normal border operations.

The Basra governorate welcomed Sheikh Fahad and his delegation at the Safwan border crossing, reflecting the joint effort to strengthen ties and maintain stability along the Kuwait-Iraq frontier. The reopening of Abdaly is expected to allow the free movement of Iraqi citizens into Kuwait and enable Kuwaitis to enter Iraq more freely, as well as to revitalize bilateral trade relations.

Officials from both sides expressed a commitment to continue cooperating on security and economic matters, aiming to bolster regional stability and economic integration. The steps taken signal a move toward normalizing cross-border exchange and further consolidating the historic partnership between Kuwait and Iraq.
