The Kuwait National Men’s Ice Hockey League has commenced its 2026-2027 season, featuring six local teams competing at the Kuwait Winter Sports Club arena in the Bayan area. The league’s schedule runs through May 2027, with two matches held weekly.
The season opened Sunday with a high-scoring and closely contested game in which the Stars, last season’s runner-up, defeated the defending champions, the Warriors, 12-9. Both teams demonstrated strong performances throughout the three periods, but the Stars ultimately secured their first victory of the tournament as they aim to reclaim the title from the Warriors, who have dominated the league for the past three seasons.
In addition to the Stars and Warriors, the Mushadz, Camels, Ice Stars, and Falcons are participating in the tournament. This edition of the league divides the teams into two groups based on last season’s results. The top three finishers including the Warriors and Stars form one group, while the remaining teams compete in the second group. The decision, according to Fuhaid Al-Ajmi, president of the Kuwait Winter Sports Club, was made by the club’s technical management to narrow skill gaps and increase competitiveness across matches.
Al-Ajmi highlighted that this season includes a larger presence of professional players across all teams. He noted that their participation raises the technical level of play and provides valuable experience to Kuwaiti players. This development is expected to benefit the national team as it prepares to host the Level 4 World Championship in March 2027.
The club, Al-Ajmi said, regards domestic competitions as essential for preparing players for international events and operates all tournaments in line with the International Ice Hockey Federation’s regulations. Matches are officiated by Kuwaiti male and female referees accredited by the federation.
Al-Ajmi encouraged winter sports enthusiasts in Kuwait to attend the games, emphasizing the speed and competitive nature of ice hockey. He praised the dedication and preparation of all participating teams ahead of the league and expressed appreciation for the support from the Public Authority for Youth and Sports, as well as the Kuwaiti Ministry of Information, which will broadcast the matches live on sports channels.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the Ministries of Health and Interior and the club’s staff in organizing the tournament. Looking beyond hockey, the club remains committed to regularly hosting competitions in figure skating, curling, and speed skating—Olympic sports under its supervision—to foster the development of Kuwaiti athletes in winter disciplines. The strong performances witnessed in the opening game signal a promising season ahead.
