Kuwait has urged full compliance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026), which condemns Iranian attacks targeting Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and Jordan. The call was made by Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Tareq Al-Banai, during a high-level open debate at the Security Council focused on emerging technologies and maritime security.
Speaking on November 1, 2026, Al-Banai emphasized the critical need to protect international maritime routes and uphold freedom of navigation. He highlighted the significance of strategic waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab Al-Mandab Strait, essential channels for global trade and energy transportation.
The Kuwaiti ambassador underscored that maritime security and the safeguarding of these routes are a collective responsibility. He warned against selective enforcement or double standards in applying international law, calling for consistent respect for established legal frameworks governing freedom of navigation.
The debate at the Security Council addressed the broader implications of advancements in technology on maritime security and international peace. Kuwait’s intervention reflected growing concerns among Gulf states about threats posed to maritime stability by hostile acts and escalating regional tensions.
Resolution 2817 (2026) explicitly condemned Iranian attacks on GCC member states and Jordan, emphasizing the Security Council’s stance against actions undermining regional security and freedom of navigation. Kuwait’s remarks reinforced the bloc’s position on the importance of adherence to UN resolutions and international norms to prevent further destabilization in the Gulf and wider maritime domains.
