Kuwait’s Ambassador to Switzerland, Yousef Ahmad Abdulsamad, formally presented his credentials to Swiss President Guy Parmelin on September 9 at the Federal Palace in Bern, marking the continuation of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The presentation ceremony underscored the longstanding partnership between Kuwait and Switzerland, which this year celebrates six decades since establishing formal ties.
During the meeting, Ambassador Abdulsamad conveyed greetings from His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, along with their wishes for ongoing health and prosperity for both Swiss leadership and people. The ambassador emphasized the robust economic and trade connections between Kuwait and Switzerland, highlighting Switzerland’s significant role as a destination for Kuwaiti investment. He expressed a commitment to expanding opportunities for private sector collaboration in both countries.
President Parmelin reciprocated the greetings and extended his wishes for continued progress and well-being to Kuwait’s leaders and citizens. He praised the strong bilateral relations and reaffirmed Switzerland’s dedication to deepening cooperation across multiple sectors in ways that serve the mutual interests of both nations.
Ambassador Abdulsamad noted that 2026 marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Kuwait and Switzerland, describing the relationship as historic and distinguished. He referenced several milestone events during the anniversary year, including President Parmelin’s official visit to Kuwait in February, which featured high-level discussions. Other highlights mentioned were the inaugural Kuwaiti-Swiss Business Forum and the launch of the first direct Kuwait Airways flight connecting Kuwait International Airport with Zurich Airport.
Beyond economic ties, the meeting also highlighted the alignment between Kuwait and Switzerland on key political principles. Both sides expressed their shared commitment to respecting international law, prioritizing dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution, and promoting preventive diplomacy and mediation. They underscored their readiness to collaborate on international security, support efforts to reduce global tensions, and enhance humanitarian aid and international humanitarian law. The two governments stressed the importance of continuing coordination to address common challenges, particularly amid ongoing regional and global geopolitical developments.
