Dr. Rawan Al-Raish, a Kuwaiti physician currently completing her residency in Anesthesia and Intensive Care in Germany, has contributed to a significant study on the pharmacokinetics of the antibiotic tigecycline in patients undergoing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) treatment. The research, conducted in collaboration with healthcare professionals in Kuwait, was carried out in the intensive care units of Amiri and Jaber hospitals, focusing on critically ill patients receiving ECMO therapy.

ECMO, a life-support technique that circulates blood through an artificial lung outside the body, is frequently used in severe cases of respiratory or cardiac failure. However, the procedure alters normal physiological processes and can affect how medications are absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and eliminated, posing challenges for appropriate antibiotic dosing. The study aimed to clarify how ECMO influences the pharmacokinetics of tigecycline, an antibiotic commonly administered to treat infections in critically ill patients.

Researchers collected timed blood samples from patients on ECMO to measure tigecycline concentrations and analyze its pharmacokinetic profile. This approach provided valuable clinical data in an area where limited evidence exists, particularly concerning optimal antibiotic use during ECMO support. The findings offer insights into how tigecycline exposure may differ in this patient population compared to others not on ECMO.

By establishing a clearer understanding of drug behavior under ECMO conditions, the research seeks to inform safer and more effective dosing regimens. This could ultimately minimize the risks of inadequate antibiotic levels that may lead to treatment failure, as well as excessive dosing that can cause toxicity.

The study was published in the peer-reviewed journal BMC Anesthesiology and underscores the importance of international collaboration in advancing medical research.
