The Kuwaiti Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy (MEWRE) took part in the 2026 session of the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE) held in Paris. The event, recognized as a leading global forum on electric power systems, convened international experts, specialists, and policymakers to discuss the latest developments and innovations in the field.
The Kuwaiti delegation was led by Undersecretary Dr. Mohammad Al-Zamel and included key figures such as Eng. Athari Al-Mohammad, chairperson of the CIGRE Gulf Board; Eng. Sanaa Al-Ghareeb, a board member; and Dr. Abeer Al-Maimouni, representing Kuwait University. Several engineers and specialists from MEWRE also participated.
During the conference, the delegation reviewed recent research and technological advancements related to the development and operation of electric power systems. Topics covered included Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), grid-forming technologies, and sophisticated monitoring, metering, and control systems. Discussions also addressed international experiences in electricity markets, energy exchange, digital solutions, and the integration of renewable energy sources.
Participants at the event had the opportunity to visit a technical exhibition featuring more than 330 specialized global companies. The exhibition showcased the most current equipment and solutions in high- and medium-voltage systems, protection technologies, monitoring and control mechanisms, and digital innovations.
In addition to Kuwait’s active participation, the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) received an award for a research paper that was recognized for its significant technical and scientific contribution. The award was presented to Dr. Adel Al-Zamel, a board member of GCCIA, during the session.
