Ukraine is accelerating efforts to develop a European anti-ballistic missile system, aiming to have a prototype ready by mid-2027, a senior Ukrainian official announced. The initiative, known as Freyja, seeks to provide a more affordable alternative to existing systems like the U.S.-supplied Patriot batteries currently used by Ukraine.
Davyd Aloaian, deputy secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council and the official overseeing the Freyja project, said an international steering committee responsible for assessing research and development costs is expected to meet soon. The committee forms part of a broader coalition comprised of 10 European nations and numerous defense manufacturers established to guide the program.
The coalition was officially launched at a summit in Paris two weeks ago, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky joined European leaders and industry representatives to endorse the initiative. Aloaian highlighted the tight schedule, emphasizing the ambitious goal of delivering a minimum viable product within the next six months.
Ukraine’s current reliance on Patriot air defense systems has underscored the need for a more accessible and cost-effective solution for intercepting Russian ballistic missiles. While Patriot batteries remain the only systems in Ukraine’s arsenal capable of countering ballistic threats, their limited availability and high cost pose challenges.
Freyja aims to fill this gap by creating a European-developed platform that could enhance defensive capabilities not only for Ukraine but potentially for other countries reliant on such technology. The project reflects growing cooperation among European states and manufacturers to reduce dependence on U.S. hardware amid ongoing security concerns linked to Russia’s missile attacks.
