He stated that since early July, Ukrainian intelligence documented increased Russian satellite monitoring of Gulf states and U.S. installations, imagery that he claims is subsequently utilized by Iranian forces to prepare for and assess the results of their attacks.
Western defense officials acknowledged a notable improvement in Iran’s precision and target selection in recent weeks, a development they link to renewed hostilities following the breakdown of a ceasefire with the United States. One defense source drew parallels between this escalation and the early stages of Western support for Ukraine, emphasizing how initial reluctance gave way to more substantial arms deliveries and intelligence sharing once Ukraine demonstrated resilience.
The incident has wider implications for U.S. domestic politics, particularly in relation to former President Donald Trump’s position on the Ukraine conflict. Zelensky and some of his allies hope that exposing Russia’s role in supporting Iran might influence Trump’s stance, encouraging him and his supporters within the conservative MAGA movement to increase their backing for Ukraine. Laura Loomer, a conservative journalist and vocal Trump supporter, visited Kyiv recently and accused Russia of financing Iran’s military operations, including attacks that have resulted in the deaths of U.S. servicemen.
Last week, the Pentagon confirmed the deaths of three American troops in an Iranian strike, potentially marking the 18th U.S. casualty linked to the tensions between the two countries. Despite the ongoing Russian-Iranian cooperation, Trump has been hesitant to openly criticize Russian President Vladimir Putin, a reluctance attributed by some analysts to the MAGA base’s general opposition to involvement in foreign conflicts.
Iran condemned the Ukrainian attack, describing it as an act of aggression that risked escalading the conflict. Tehran insisted the targeted vessel was commercial and summoned Ukraine’s senior diplomat for formal protests. It also communicated its objections to the European Union, with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi lodging a complaint to EU official Kajsa Kallas.
