Australian singer Kylie Minogue has opened up in a new documentary about her private battles with breast cancer and her pursuit of motherhood through in vitro fertilization (IVF). The three-part series, which premiered today on Netflix, offers an intimate look at Minogue’s experiences following her initial diagnosis in 2005 and a recurrence in 2021.
Minogue, 57, first revealed her breast cancer diagnosis publicly in 2005 but shares in the documentary that she initially delayed chemotherapy to pursue IVF treatments in hopes of starting a family with then-partner Olivier Martinez. She describes this decision as “quite scary” but grounded in a strong desire to have children, an ambition she has discussed over the years. Despite several IVF attempts fueled by “a thread of hope,” she was ultimately unsuccessful.
The singer was initially treated in Paris, where she recalls a pivotal moment looking out the window at the illuminated Eiffel Tower that strengthened her resolve to fight the disease. After completing treatment, she returned to touring, although she admits the process was physically draining. Her battle with cancer required resilience and led her to reflect deeply on the importance of early detection, which she credits with saving her life.
In addition to recounting her first diagnosis, Minogue reveals she faced breast cancer again in 2021. This recurrence was a deciding factor in her return to Melbourne, Australia, to be closer to family. “I was saved, I really was,” she says, highlighting the support she received from loved ones and fans worldwide. She has kept letters and messages from supporters, which she says were a vital source of comfort during difficult times.
Minogue also discusses the emotional impact of her cancer journey through her music, notably writing the song “Story” with collaborator Richard “Biff” Stannard as a means of processing her experience. She shares excerpts from a letter she wrote to the child she hoped to have, reflecting the poignancy of her fertility struggles.
Her sister, Dannii Minogue, appears in the series expressing her heartbreak over Kylie’s unrealized dream of parenthood and recalling the helplessness she felt during her sister’s initial illness. The documentary also touches on Minogue’s triumphs, such as her long-awaited headline performance at the Glastonbury Festival in 2019 after having to withdraw from the event in 2005 due to her illness. Minogue describes the moment as a “wave of love” and credits the support she received for helping her reach that milestone.
Looking ahead, Minogue says she plans to take life at a slower pace but jokes about her enduring passion for music. “Pop music nurtures me. My passion for music is greater than ever,” she remarks, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the future while remaining committed to her craft.
