Kyogo Furuhashi’s future in professional football remains uncertain as he prepares to begin the new season with Birmingham City in the English Championship. The 31-year-old striker, who left Celtic for Stade Rennes just over a year ago for a reported £10 million, has been linked with a possible return to the Scottish champions if his performances in England do not meet expectations.
Furuhashi established himself as a key player during his tenure at Celtic, netting 85 goals and contributing to eight trophy wins. However, since his return to British football last season, the forward has struggled for form, scoring only three goals. His time at Birmingham has been further hampered by a shoulder injury that required surgery, leading to an early end to his previous campaign. At St Andrew’s, he had fallen to fourth choice in the striking hierarchy.
Celtic reportedly attempted to secure his return during the January transfer window, but negotiations ultimately fell through. The Scottish club continues to face challenges in replenishing its attacking options, especially as Daizen Maeda appears increasingly likely to depart. Manager Martin O’Neill is aiming to strengthen the squad’s offensive capabilities, with Qarabag forward Camilo Duran poised to join the team.
Former Birmingham striker Kevin Phillips expressed cautious optimism about Furuhashi’s prospects with the club but emphasized the need for immediate impact. Speaking to reporters, Phillips stated that while he has always seen potential in the Japanese forward, consistent performances have been lacking. He added that a slow start at Birmingham could result in the club deciding to move the player on, potentially back to Celtic or elsewhere, as fans and management may be reluctant to sustain a striker who does not deliver quickly.
As Kyogo begins training in the Midlands ahead of the new season, his ability to regain form and fitness will likely determine whether he secures a lasting role at Birmingham or faces another transition in his career.
