Authorities arrested a heavily armed man outside President Donald Trump’s golf course in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, two days before the president was scheduled to attend a Republican National Committee fundraising event at the same location. The detention took place on Sunday afternoon after federal agents noticed the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Jeanine John Taele of Downey, California, taking photographs and apparently observing security arrangements at Trump National Golf Club.
Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies responded around 3:30 p.m. and found Taele in possession of a loaded pistol and a 16-round magazine loaded with hollow-point ammunition. Additional magazines and ammunition were discovered in Taele’s vehicle parked at the golf course. Deputies also determined that Taele was under investigation by the El Segundo Police Department in connection with a 2025 robbery, leading to his detention and subsequent arrest on charges including carrying a concealed firearm and possessing prohibited ammunition. Bail was set at $250,000, and Taele pleaded not guilty.
The investigation intensified when authorities obtained a search warrant for Taele’s residence in Downey. There, sheriff’s detectives and FBI agents uncovered an illegally modified AR platform rifle, a .45-caliber pistol, body armor, high-capacity magazines, bulk pistol and rifle ammunition, two radio signal devices, and multiple notebooks containing statements described by law enforcement as concerning. Additional charges were filed, including possession of a short-barreled rifle and manufacturing or possessing large-capacity magazines. Authorities have not publicly indicated any direct threat to the president or the wider community stemming from the incident.
The arrest came as President Trump arrived in Los Angeles on Tuesday for his first visit to the city in 18 months. At the same golf club, Trump was set to promote his administration’s economic policies, border security measures, and public safety initiatives during the fundraising event. The day’s activities also drew demonstrations, with protesters and supporters clashing in the vicinity of the club.
During his visit, Governor Gavin Newsom highlighted ongoing concerns about wildfire relief efforts in California, noting that despite submission of more than $1.5 billion in Federal Emergency Management Agency claims, only $37 million had been approved to date for emergency response and infrastructure repairs following recent fires. Trump did not comment on the wildfire aid issue but focused on promoting his administration’s economic record during his appearances in California and the scheduled stop in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Taele’s actions and his intentions at the golf course. Law enforcement has reassured the public that no credible threat to the community was identified in connection with the arrest.
