Growing consumer acceptance and ethical concerns are reshaping the global diamond market, as lab-grown diamonds increasingly challenge the traditional natural mining industry. According to recent polling data from YouGov, more than half of British couples now express a willingness to choose lab-grown diamonds for engagement rings.

One notable player in this emerging market is Skydiamond, a Gloucestershire-based startup owned by entrepreneur Dale Vince. The company produces synthetic diamonds using atmospheric carbon dioxide and hydrogen extracted from rainwater. These elements, combined with methane and nitrogen, are introduced into vacuum chambers where diamonds form on microscopic laboratory-grown seeds. The process takes place within microwave-induced plasma balls heated to around 1,000 degrees Celsius and is powered entirely by renewable solar and wind energy. This method allows Skydiamond to grow diamonds within weeks at a significantly lower cost—approximately one-fifth or less of the price of traditional mined diamonds. Reflecting growing commercial interest, Dutch retailer Zeeman recently launched a line of 0.1-carat lab-grown diamond pendants priced at €29.99 each.

While chemically identical to natural diamonds, lab-grown gems can be distinguished by specific impurities and crystal growth patterns. Natural stones typically contain nitrogen-based defects, whereas synthetic diamonds exhibit defects from quartz, silicon, or nickel residue associated with industrial production processes. These differences are detectable through specialized spectroscopic analysis.

Beyond pricing and identification, ethical considerations are increasingly influencing consumer choices. Natural diamonds mined in Russia represent a particular concern following the country’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The European Union imposed a ban on Russian diamond imports in January 2024. However, significant volumes of Russian diamonds have reportedly been diverted through markets such as Dubai, contributing to a surplus that has depressed global prices. Russia’s Alrosa, the state mining company, now accounts for nearly one-third of world diamond production, surpassing De Beers. While De Beers incurred losses approaching half a billion dollars last year, Alrosa’s profits nearly doubled, reaching comparable figures.

Another longstanding issue is the stigma associated with so-called “blood diamonds”—gems mined in conflict zones to finance armed groups. Although many African countries once plagued by such violence are now more stable, the legacy persists in the public consciousness, partly due to media like the 2016 film Blood Diamond which spotlighted exploitation in Sierra Leone during the 1990s and early 2000s. The industry responded in 2003 with the adoption of the Kimberley Process, a United Nations-supported certification scheme aimed at preventing diamonds mined in rebel-controlled areas from entering legitimate markets. Nevertheless, critics note that the Kimberley Process does not address all ethical concerns, such as diamonds mined under oppressive regimes or by child labor.

As lab-grown diamonds become more mainstream due to affordability and ethical appeal, they are poised to further disrupt traditional diamond mining, prompting the industry to adapt amid shifting consumer values and geopolitical pressures.
