A Laguna Beach man has been charged with killing his mother with a hammer inside his home last week, according to prosecutors. Safford James Wolfson, 36, was taken into custody following the July 20 incident, which unfolded at his residence after a family member raised the alarm.

Authorities responded after Wolfson’s grandmother discovered a disturbing scene featuring broken furniture and Wolfson himself covered in blood on the floor. Officers found Angela Caprioli, 61, in a bedroom suffering from severe blunt force trauma to her head and face. Caprioli, who was visiting from Maine, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wolfson, who runs a sober living and adult-care facility in Rancho Palos Verdes alongside his mother, was hospitalized and treated for self-inflicted neck wounds, according to Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer. Wolfson is currently being held on $1 million bail. He faces felony charges of murder with a deadly weapon enhancement, carrying a potential sentence ranging from 26 years to life in prison if convicted.

“It is heartbreaking to think that someone could so violently end the life of the very person who gave them life,” Spitzer said in a statement. He added that the district attorney’s office will continue to pursue justice in the case. The investigation remains ongoing as the court process proceeds.
