Luka Doncic made an immediate impact in his debut with the Los Angeles Lakers, leading the team to a 127-105 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night at Crypto.com Arena. Marking a new chapter for the franchise, Doncic addressed Lakers fans before tip-off, signaling his role as the team’s new leader following LeBron James’ departure to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Doncic contributed 28 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists, despite committing six turnovers. He displayed both skill and competitive fire, notably engaging in an on-court exchange with Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg during the second quarter that resulted in a technical foul on Lendeborg. Following the incident, Doncic drilled a half-court three-pointer and continued to energize the Lakers’ offense with creative plays, including several lob passes to Walker Kessler.

Kessler, acquired in a sign-and-trade deal with Utah during the offseason, made an impressive Lakers debut, finishing with 26 points on a perfect 12-for-12 shooting, along with nine rebounds and two blocks. Fellow guard Austin Reaves added 23 points and six assists, providing additional offensive support.

The 2023-24 season marks a distinct shift for the Lakers, as they navigate the post-LeBron era. James, who had been the focal point of the team for the past eight seasons, missed last year’s opening game due to sciatica and now continues his career with the 76ers. Lakers head coach JJ Redick acknowledged the change, describing it simply as “different” rather than better or worse, and emphasized the team’s focus on building around its current roster.

Redick also noted the consistency and leadership James provided during his tenure. “There was a good feeling to know every time you get in the building, that he’d probably be in the weight room getting ready to go,” Redick said.

The Lakers' lineup was missing point guard Collin Sexton, sidelined by a right soleus strain. Sexton, a recent free-agent signing, had also missed all five preseason games but had participated in practices leading up to the opener. Coach Redick described the injury as a soft tissue issue that requires cautious management to ensure Sexton’s full confidence upon return.

Additionally, second-year forward Adou Thiero was out due to a left knee effusion and swelling, while rookie Cameron Carr sat out with a right oblique strain. Late in the game, forward Jake LaRavia suffered an ankle injury and was taken to the locker room for evaluation.

Despite these setbacks, the Lakers delivered a strong performance in their season opener, with Doncic clearly establishing himself as their new centerpiece.
