Bristol Rugby faces a significant injury crisis early in the Premiership season, with director of rugby Pat Lam describing the current situation as the worst he has experienced in his coaching career. The club experienced further setbacks during their recent victory over Exeter at Ashton Gate, where wing Josh Carrington and centre Jack Bates sustained head injuries and are ruled out of Friday’s match against Gloucester. Outside-half Tom Jordan is also likely to miss the fixture as he prepares for a disciplinary hearing following a 20-minute red card for a dangerous tackle. Additionally, England prop Ellis Genge left the match with a leg injury, further compounding the squad’s challenges.
Lam revealed that the squad has been severely impacted by injuries throughout the month, with four backs—Harry Randall, Gabriel Ibitoye, AJ MacGinty, and Joe Jenkins—already requiring surgery. The situation forced Lam to cancel a training session last week due to 15 backs being unavailable. “We are seeing who is out there,” he said, highlighting the strain on player availability.
Regarding Genge’s condition, Lam noted the prop had sustained a blow to his shin and was receiving treatment but provided no definitive update on the severity of his injury. Lam emphasized the unusual nature of the club’s predicament, stating the training intensity remains significantly reduced, unusually light for this point in the season, typically reserved for the closing stages.
To bolster the squad amid these difficulties, Bristol secured a short-term loan signing of Argentina three-quarter Matias Moroni, who was present at Ashton Gate for the Exeter match and is expected to participate against Gloucester. Moroni brings a wealth of experience, having earned 93 caps for Argentina and previously played in the Premiership with Leicester Tigers and Newcastle Falcons. Lam stressed the club’s focus is not on the sheer number of players available but on those who can make a meaningful impact.
The impending match against Gloucester marks a critical test for Bristol as they contend with diminished options and seek continuity in a season disrupted by an unprecedented string of injuries.
