Spain extended their impressive unbeaten streak to 40 matches with a commanding 4-1 victory over Croatia on Tuesday in the UEFA Nations League at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan in Seville. This was Spain’s first home game since their World Cup triumph in June, where they defeated Argentina in the final held in the United States.
The standout performer was 19-year-old Lamine Yamal, who opened the scoring within 75 seconds of kickoff and later added a second goal, also providing an assist. His contribution increased his international goal tally to 10 in 35 appearances, further enhancing his growing reputation and strengthening his case for this year’s Ballon d’Or, with voting having just closed and the award scheduled for October 26.
In addition to Yamal's two goals, contributions came from Marc Pubill and Nico Williams. Pubill scored with a header from a Yamal cross just after Croatia had equalised through Dion Beljo, who headed in from an Ivan Perisic cross. Williams sealed the victory near the end with a skilled dribble and finish, securing the fourth goal for Spain.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente praised Yamal’s impact, noting that his talents have been instrumental in the team’s success and expressed optimism about the teenager’s future recognition. “We’ve enjoyed his magic in the service of the team. In the future, he’ll be much more recognised for what he does and for his contribution to the team’s play,” de la Fuente said.
Before the match, Spain’s captain Rodri proudly displayed the World Cup trophy to the packed stadium, having received it from Sevilla legend Jesus Navas, a member of Spain’s 2010 World Cup-winning squad. Yamal described the moment as special, saying it was a thrill to bring the trophy to their home ground and secure a win in front of their fans.
Croatia, who made six changes from their recent victory over the Czech Republic, included Luka Modric on the bench. Coach Slaven Bilic’s side managed to temporarily equalise through Beljo but were ultimately overwhelmed by Spain’s attacking prowess. De la Fuente acknowledged Croatia’s defensive strength and aerial ability, but highlighted Spain’s control and passing as key factors in the win.
Spain is scheduled to face the Czech Republic next on Saturday in Group A3 of the Nations League, where they will look to maintain their unbeaten run.
