Frank Lampard has highlighted the importance of harnessing “good tension” within the squad as Coventry City prepares to host Newcastle United at the CBS Arena on Monday, still seeking their first top-flight home victory of the season. The club’s recent 1-0 away win against Nottingham Forest before the international break has injected cautious optimism into the team and its supporters.
Coventry’s home form has been underwhelming so far, including a heavy 5-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion, which Lampard acknowledged as falling short of expectations. To motivate his players, the head coach has revisited their February 3-1 victory over Middlesbrough, a key fixture that launched a successful promotion push from the Championship last season. Lampard emphasized the importance of the relationship between the team and its supporters, describing the fans as “incredible” and essential to creating a challenging atmosphere for visiting teams.
“We rely on them and that two-way relationship means we want to give them something to enjoy at home and not give us sympathetic support but support in the game,” Lampard said. He added that while last season’s successes generated joy at the CBS Arena, the current campaign presents tougher challenges, making strong fan backing more crucial than ever.
The Middlesbrough match stands out in Lampard’s memory as a turning point, marking the start of a run that saw Coventry win seven of eight games after previously securing just one point in three matches. Reflecting on that performance, Lampard said the players responded well under pressure and played with a constructive kind of tension that he seeks to replicate throughout the season.
“That game was our outstanding performance last year, considering what was at stake,” Lampard remarked. “Now we have to do 38 versions of that kind of feeling to get things nailed on and we hope we can do it.”
Despite the team’s position near the lower end of the Premier League table, Lampard expressed continued enjoyment in his role and confidence in the club’s resilience. “I’m savvy enough to know that this year is going to be completely different and the challenges will feel different so you sort of prepare yourself for that,” he said. “But I still enjoy it and I still feel we as a group, as a club, have some credit in the bank.”
Lampard warned that the team will need to adopt a “more determined face” in their effort to close the gap on other sides, emphasizing the need to fight for results as the season progresses. With home form yet to improve, Coventry faces a pivotal moment in building momentum to secure their status in the Premier League.
