Landry Shamet has entered his ninth NBA season with the New York Knicks, marking the first time in his career that he has remained with the same team for three consecutive years. Previously, Shamet struggled to secure a lasting spot, frequently signing nonguaranteed contracts and fighting to remain on the roster. Last year, his position seemed uncertain until the unexpected retirement of Malcolm Brogdon opened a final spot, which Shamet successfully claimed.
Following an important role off the bench during the Knicks’ recent championship run, Shamet was rewarded with a four-year, $24 million contract extension this past offseason. Speaking after a practice session, Shamet expressed his gratitude for the stability and trust the organization has shown.
“It definitely gives you a sense of perspective and appreciation that I’m grateful for,” Shamet said. He also highlighted the personal significance of the deal, noting how it allows him and his fiancée, Cammi, to remain in New York and continue building their lives together. “To be believed in and have that offered to me… it’s humbling and I’m grateful for it every day,” he added.
Shamet described having clarity about his role as both liberating and motivational. Reflecting on his career challenges, he said, “That’s why you work through the difficult times and the challenging and the questioning ones. Typically, there’s really good stuff on the other end of that.” He emphasized that the new contract is not a reason for complacency but rather a source of pride and renewed energy heading into the season.
Alongside Shamet, two other backup guards who were free agents—Jose Alvarado and Jordan Clarkson—also returned to the Knicks this offseason. All three players spent portions of last season alternating in and out of Coach Mike Brown’s rotation. Shamet pointed to the camaraderie and mutual commitment within this group as a key factor in their decisions to re-sign, despite sometimes limited playing time.
“We care about each other,” Shamet said. “We want to win for each other. We’re willing to take on different roles and we know that we’ve got each other’s back.”
