Trainer Brian Ellison has positioned Sea Lantern as a leading contender for the upcoming Club Godolphin Cesarewitch at Newmarket. The four-year-old gelding’s odds have shortened notably to 10-1 after a commanding four-and-a-half-length victory at Pontefract last month. Sea Lantern is scheduled to compete over 2 miles 2 furlongs on the Rowley Mile this Saturday.

Following the Pontefract win, the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) raised Sea Lantern’s official rating by 8 pounds to a mark of 93. Under current regulations, any horse winning a single race after August 22 must carry a 4-pound penalty in subsequent events over the same distance, which applies to Sea Lantern for Saturday’s race. Despite this, bookmakers remain optimistic about his chances. Paddy Power’s Paul Binfield highlighted the significant drop in odds, from 33-1 to 10-1, noting trainer Ellison’s reputation as a "handicap wizard," citing past successes such as Onesmoothoperator.

Sea Lantern’s performance this season has shown promise. After finishing third behind Listed winner Infraad on his first start for Ellison at Pontefract in April, he secured his first victory following a 141-day break. The gelding was acquired by owner Patrick Boyle while in Australia, where he was preparing another horse, Onesmoothoperator, for the 2025 Melbourne Cup. Boyle described the plan to allow Sea Lantern time to settle in and emphasized his expectations for improvement over longer distances, as Saturday’s race represents a step up of six furlongs from the gelding’s previous outings.

Boyle also noted that one of his other Cesarewitch runners, Tashkhan, who finished third in 2023, has been entered again this year. He expressed hope for rain to soften the ground, which could be beneficial for Sea Lantern’s performance.

In a related development, racing is expected to return to Chelmsford City Racecourse on November 2 after Arena Racing Company secured a multi-year lease for the venue, signaling renewed activity at the circuit later this year.
