Laos is undertaking efforts to upgrade its healthcare system by modernizing central and provincial hospitals while expanding primary healthcare services in rural areas, officials announced during the first extraordinary session of the country's 10th National Assembly.

Health Minister Baykham Khattiya outlined the Ministry of Health’s plans to enhance service quality across the country and improve access to medical care, with a particular focus on remote and underserved communities. The modernization initiative aims to boost the capabilities of central and provincial hospitals, supporting the government’s broader objective of establishing a self-reliant and sustainable healthcare system.

In addition to hospital upgrades, the ministry plans to strengthen district hospitals, health centers, and village health volunteers. These measures are intended to advance health education, facilitate disease prevention, and improve screening and treatment services at the community level.

Through this dual approach—upgrading higher-level medical facilities and reinforcing grassroots health services—Laos seeks to ensure more equitable healthcare access nationwide and address the varied needs of its population. The government’s commitment reflects ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare infrastructure and promote public health across both urban and rural regions.
