Last-minute negotiations are scheduled to take place today in an effort to prevent strikes by London Underground drivers over a dispute involving changes to their working week. Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) have announced plans to strike tomorrow and Thursday, potentially causing significant disruption to travel across the capital.
The dispute centers on proposals to introduce a four-day working week, a change that the RMT membership opposes. While RMT members have expressed serious concerns about the changes, the drivers' union Aslef has accepted the new arrangements. Transport for London (TfL) has urged passengers to check travel updates ahead of the planned strike days.
Claire Mann, TfL’s chief operating officer, expressed cautious optimism, stating that the issues raised by the union could be resolved in time to avoid industrial action. A spokesperson for the union highlighted that the concerns voiced by members are substantial and remain unresolved.
The talks represent the final opportunity to reach an agreement before the scheduled strike begins, and both sides appear to be seeking a resolution to prevent disruption to millions of commuters who rely on the Tube network.
