Senior Constable Barraza played a critical role in a recent firefight during a terror attack at Bondi, using his advanced training and newly issued firearm to neutralize the attackers. According to accounts, Barraza displayed remarkable composure throughout the incident, reporting no fear or fatigue as he engaged the assailants.
The confrontation began with Barraza entering the scene armed with a single magazine loaded with 18 rounds and no additional ammunition. During the exchange, he fired 15 shots, successfully bringing down both attackers within seven minutes and 40 seconds of the first shot. When the incident concluded, three bullets remained in his magazine.
Following the shooting, Barraza spent approximately an hour assisting with securing the area and helping authorities identify victims. Due to his direct involvement in the shooting, he was subsequently removed from the immediate crime scene to undergo the standard critical incident procedures. He later returned to Bondi police station, where his unfinished dinner remained untouched, highlighting the sudden disruption caused by the attack.
Barraza’s position at the scene coincided with a recent transfer to Bondi, a posting he viewed with particular significance given his deep religious beliefs as a Seventh-day Adventist Christian. Having previously worked in cybercrime, he had applied for promotion at three different commands—Cumberland, Campbelltown, and Bondi—and prayed, both personally and with his pastor, for placement where his skills would be most needed.
He was recently issued a Glock 17 service pistol prior to the shooting, a firearm noted for its enhanced ammunition capacity and accuracy compared to the standard-issued sidearm carried by many officers. His firearms training is reported to be more advanced than that of the average officer, contributing to his effectiveness during the incident.
Barraza inspected a tree behind which he took cover during the gunfight and found several bullet holes, underscoring how narrowly events could have unfolded. The incident highlights both the dangers faced by law enforcement personnel during active engagements and the importance of comprehensive training and equipment in critical moments.
