Alcaraz came on as a substitute with approximately 15 minutes remaining and netted the winner just three minutes later, breaking the deadlock against Joao Virginia, Wolves’ goalkeeper making his first start for the club. Virginia, who had previously spent six years at Everton before leaving the club last year, was credited with several crucial saves throughout the match.

The first half was marked by multiple attempts from Everton striker Thierno Barry, twice thwarted by Virginia. Notably, in stoppage time at the end of the opening half, the goalkeeper tipped a Barry header over the bar, preserving the goalless scoreline. Early in the second half, Virginia continued his strong performance, stopping further efforts from Everton’s Garner and quickly closing down Wolves’ Brennan Johnson to prevent scoring chances.

The match also drew special guests as Burnham was joined by Mark Carney, the Canadian counterpart of the Prime Minister and a fellow Everton fan, who was invited to the game following discussions between the two in July. Despite the early frustration from missed opportunities and solid defensive play, Everton eventually broke through late thanks to Alcaraz’s contribution, allowing manager David Moyes’ team to advance in the tournament.
