Sheffield Wednesday’s new manager Dave Challinor was denied a victorious start after former Owl Jerry Yates scored a late equalizer for Blackpool in a 1-1 draw on Saturday. Challinor was officially appointed as head coach just hours before kickoff, succeeding Henrik Pedersen, but his side remains outside the League One play-off positions following the match.
The game started well for Wednesday as Davis Keillor-Dunn, on loan from Wrexham, opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a composed solo effort. However, the hosts were reduced to ten men shortly before halftime when defender Sil Swinkels received a straight red card for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity to Blackpool’s Tom Bloxham. Despite being a man down, Wednesday managed to maintain their lead for much of the second half.
Blackpool, known as the Tangerines, pressed persistently and were rewarded in the 81st minute when substitute Yates capitalized on a high cross from Albie Morgan. The former Sheffield Wednesday player shielded his marker and poked the ball into the net, securing a valuable point for Blackpool.
Interim Sheffield Wednesday coach Matt Hamshaw expressed confidence in Challinor’s appointment, describing the new manager as “excellent” and noting his proven track record at this level. “It’s exciting times. This club is going places,” Hamshaw said.
Challinor brings a strong managerial background to Hillsborough, having guided Stockport County from the National League to the League Two title within three seasons. He also led Stockport to the League One play-offs twice before departing by mutual consent at the end of last season after losing the play-off final to Bolton Wanderers.
Blackpool manager Ian Evatt viewed the result positively, stating that the draw represented progress for his side despite the late goal. The match highlighted the resilience of both teams, with Wednesday adjusting to a new managerial regime while Blackpool demonstrated their fighting spirit under pressure.
Sheffield Wednesday will be looking to build momentum as they aim to break into the play-off places, while Blackpool continue their campaign to secure a higher league finish.
