Inter Milan secured a 2-0 victory over Venezia on Wednesday in a Serie A match decided by two late own goals. The defending champions moved level on points with Lazio at the top of the league standings ahead of their derby against AC Milan on Saturday.
Venezia, who remain anchored to the bottom of the table, suffered their eighth defeat in nine matches. The game remained goalless until the 80th minute when Venezia defender Matías Moreno inadvertently put the ball into his own net. Two minutes later, fellow defender Redouane Halhal also scored an own goal, effectively sealing the win for Inter Milan.
Meanwhile, AC Milan’s unbeaten streak under coach Rúben Amorim came to an end in a 4-2 home defeat to Bologna. Milan had taken an early 2-0 lead with goals from Alphadjo Cissé at the start of each half, but Belgian winger Samuel Mbangula turned the match around by scoring a hat trick for Bologna. Mbangula’s first goal came in the eighth minute, and after Milan went up 2-1 at halftime, Bologna equalized through an own goal by Milan’s Bartesaghi at the 60-minute mark before Mbangula completed his hat trick.
The loss leaves AC Milan in fifth position, facing a challenging clash with Inter Milan this weekend. Prior to Wednesday’s matches, Milan had maintained an unbeaten run in league play under their new manager.
Elsewhere on Wednesday, Juventus failed to capitalize on Milan’s defeat, losing 2-0 away at Genoa. Goals in the first half from defender Kingsley Ehizibue and forward Tommaso Baldanzi secured the win for Genoa. Juventus, who have won the Serie A title four times in recent years, dropped to eighth place as a result.
Napoli moved up to sixth place after a win at Monza, overtaking Juventus on goal difference. Napoli played without suspended coach Massimiliano Allegri and saw contributions from several scorers, including Denmark striker Rasmus Højlund, forward Matteo Politano, defender Rafa Marin, and former Manchester City player Kevin De Bruyne.
In a separate development, Parma and Udinese played out a goalless draw in a matchup at the lower end of the table. Additionally, all 24 Copa del Rey matches scheduled in Spain on Wednesday were postponed following a fatal train accident in central Spain.
