The horse is scheduled to compete in the Group 2 Missile Stakes over 1200 meters at Royal Randwick on Saturday, using it as a stepping stone toward a potential Group 1 showdown against Autumn Glow in the Winx Stakes two weeks later.
Midnight Dynamite’s progression has surpassed expectations, according to Darby. The gelding has demonstrated consistent improvement, drawing comparisons to previous Darby Racing horses such as Samadoubt and Flying Destiny, which steadily advanced beyond initial benchmarks. "He’s come a long, long way in such a short amount of time," Darby said. “From what Bjorn is saying, he’s not finished yet. It’s hard to know what his ceiling is.”
The horse began his 2026 campaign with a narrow victory in a Benchmark 78 race at Royal Randwick on April 25. Since then, Midnight Dynamite has compiled an impressive winter record, winning four of six starts and placing in two others, including triumphs in the Civic Stakes and Winter Challenge feature races. James McDonald, the gelding’s regular jockey, provided early indication of the horse’s latent potential during a victory in Brisbane, which gave the connections renewed confidence in the horse’s capabilities.
Darby Racing has developed a reputation over nearly two decades for identifying undervalued yearlings and nurturing them into top-tier competitors. Among their notable successes are Yankee Rose and She Will Reign, both of whom were acquired for modest sums before rising to Group 1 prominence during their careers. Darby acknowledged the challenge of sustaining this kind of success but confirmed it has become a hallmark of the syndicate’s operation.
Midnight Dynamite was purchased for $48,000 through the 2023 Magic Millions Sales, following a recommendation from Matt Comerford of Widden Stud. The gelding is closely related to ATC Derby winner Quick Thinker, sharing physical similarities that initially did not stand out but suggested athletic potential. To date, Midnight Dynamite has accumulated nine wins and total stakes earnings of $712,100.
The horse's current form has generated palpable enthusiasm among the more than 20 members of his ownership group, with Darby noting the challenge of managing expectations amid the growing buzz. Trainer Bjorn Baker has been praised for his patient approach throughout Midnight Dynamite’s development, with the horse’s recent workouts showing the quality expected of Group 1 contenders.
