Laura Hamilton is marking 15 years as a presenter on the long-running Channel 4 series "A Place In The Sun," reflecting on the variety of experiences she has encountered while helping prospective homebuyers explore properties in sunnier climes. The show, which has been on air for more than two decades, follows individuals and families seeking to exchange the often grey and rainy British weather for homes in sun-drenched locations.
Hamilton, 44, has witnessed a wide range of emotional moments during her tenure, from celebrations of new beginnings to unexpected setbacks. She recounted one memorable occasion when a woman, recently cleared of breast cancer, revealed her diagnosis was undisclosed to others and expressed how much the experience of house hunting meant to her so soon after her recovery.
The series has also seen its share of difficulties. Hamilton recalled an episode where a man proposed to his partner during filming, only to be refused. “She said, ‘Oh, he keeps trying it on. I just don’t want to get married,’” Hamilton explained with a laugh. Another incident involved a production day being cancelled in Florida after the keys to a property were accidentally locked inside, preventing access for the film crew and clients.
The new season, which begins this week, will feature locations including Spain’s Costa Tropical near Malaga and Nerja, as well as Orlando, Florida. Hamilton’s role has taken her not only abroad but also through personal challenges; she was divorced four years ago after ten years of marriage and is raising two children.
Hamilton’s own experience in real estate began early. At 15, she decided to enter the property market promptly, working part-time jobs to save money before purchasing her first home at 19. In 2017, she bought a village shop in Surrey, transforming it into a cafe, deli, and post office employing 24 people. The renovation process was demanding, complicated by construction errors such as improperly installed waste pipes, but the business persevered despite the disruptions.
More recently, Hamilton faced difficulties with a house purchase when the seller died prior to finalizing contracts. Luckily, she found an alternative property and now resides in what she calls her “forever home” in Surrey. Through her work on "A Place In The Sun," Hamilton emphasizes the importance of stepping beyond comfort zones in pursuit of personal achievements, underscoring that sometimes the greatest journeys begin at home.
