NBC has announced that Mariska Hargitay, best known for her long-running role as Capt. Olivia Benson on the drama series "Law & Order: SVU," will host the 78th Emmy Awards. The ceremony is scheduled to air on Monday, September 14, on NBC and will also be available for streaming on Peacock.

This marks a departure from recent trends, as networks typically select comedians, late-night hosts, or sitcom actors to helm the event. Recent Emmy hosts have included stand-up comedian Nate Bargatze, the “Schitt’s Creek” stars Eugene and Dan Levy, and the late-night host Jimmy Kimmel. NBC’s previous host in 2022 was "Saturday Night Live" cast member Kenan Thompson.

Jen Neal, NBC’s executive vice president of live events, praised Hargitay’s contributions to television, highlighting her 27 seasons on "Law & Order: SVU" and her portrayal of a character embodying strength and compassion. Hargitay expressed her honor at the opportunity to celebrate the community of television storytellers.

The Television Academy, which oversees the Emmy Awards, will announce this year’s nominations on Wednesday. With the rights to broadcast the awards show soon to be renegotiated, the Academy is reportedly seeking a ratings boost. Last year’s ceremony, aired on CBS, drew 7.4 million viewers, an 8 percent increase over the previous year.

Hargitay, one of television’s highest-paid actors, has played a defining role on "Law & Order: SVU" since 1999, contributing to the series' enduring popularity. Her selection as host reflects NBC’s strategy to offer a fresh approach and potentially attract a wider audience for the Emmys this year.
