Tadley Calleva’s remarkable run in this season’s FA Cup continued after they forced a replay against Aldershot Town in the first round, defying the odds as the only Step 5 club remaining at this stage. The match, held at Tadley’s EBB Stadium, saw the Romans twice come from behind to challenge a side four divisions above them, narrowly missing out on a historic victory.
Aldershot took the lead early through Marcus Dinanga, capitalizing on a deflected effort to break the deadlock. The visitors maintained pressure in the opening stages, creating several opportunities, including a header from Michael Stickland that was saved by Tadley goalkeeper Donnie Burke. Despite their advantage, Aldershot struggled to convert their dominance into more goals.
Tadley’s response was marked by resilience, even as they contended with injuries to defenders Brad Passfield and Nathan Smart. Brad Neal scored his first goal for the club with a header, and substitute Charlie Barlow made an immediate impact by scoring shortly after coming on, following a chaotic scramble from a long throw-in that Aldershot were unable to clear.
Despite further attempts from Aldershot players Marcus Wyllie, Connor Lawless, and Dinanga, it was Tadley who seized the momentum late in the game. During 11 minutes of added time, a cross from Lowes found Scott Costello whose header was spectacularly saved by Aldershot’s goalkeeper Hayes. Tadley’s persistent pressure ultimately secured them a replay, extending their best-ever FA Cup run.
Tadley manager Joe Lawler praised his team’s unwavering determination. “I couldn’t ask for more,” he said. “To come back both times, and even have a chance to win it, I couldn’t be prouder. The boys were superb. It would have been unbelievable to win it, but we’re just happy for the journey to continue, and we’ve given ourselves a chance on Tuesday night.”
Aldershot’s manager Scott Davies acknowledged Tadley’s spirited performance and expressed frustration at his own team’s failure to close out the game. “Tadley were absolutely brilliant, their fans were brilliant, and in the end they got exactly what they deserved,” Davies said. “We deserved to get booed off at the end.”
The replay offers Tadley a rare opportunity to progress further in the competition, underscoring the unpredictability and excitement of the FA Cup’s early rounds.
