India completed a convincing 3-0 sweep of Zimbabwe in the T20 International series with a 35-run victory in the third and final match held in Harare on Sunday. Central to the win was teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who scored a commanding 81 runs off 49 balls, further cementing his reputation as one of cricket’s most promising young talents.
The 15-year-old left-handed batsman ended the series with a total of 151 runs and was named Player of the Series in what marked his first such accolade at the senior international level. Sooryavanshi’s performance in Zimbabwe followed an exceptional showing earlier this year in the ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup, where he amassed 439 runs and earned the Player of the Tournament award.
Stand-in India head coach VVS Laxman praised Sooryavanshi’s development, describing his progress as consistent with expectations. Laxman noted the young player’s capacity to handle pressure, citing his experience with the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League as a critical factor in his growth. “At 14 or 15, when you’re playing in the IPL, either you can be overawed by the occasion or embrace the pressure. I think he chose the second option,” Laxman said.
The former India batter emphasized Sooryavanshi’s talent, mindset, and attitude as key reasons behind his rapid rise and predicted a long and successful international career for the teenager. Laxman acknowledged Sooryavanshi’s disappointment at narrowly missing a century in the final match but reassured him that many such opportunities lie ahead. “He’s got all the potential and ability to break records at the international level,” Laxman stated.
The series also marked a milestone for India’s T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, who recorded his first series win in the format following a challenging start to his captaincy tenure.
