Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris has dismissed transfer speculation surrounding captain Granit Xhaka, affirming that the Switzerland midfielder will remain with the club this summer. Chelsea has been linked with a move for Xhaka following his influential role in Sunderland’s return to the Premier League last season, where they secured a spot in European competitions. However, Le Bris firmly ruled out any departure, emphasizing the player’s commitment to the team.

“No, this topic is closed,” Le Bris said when asked about Xhaka’s future. He highlighted the midfielder’s dedication, saying, “He has been really clear about his future. He loves Sunderland, he wants to stay in Sunderland. He wants to make the future of Sunderland. He is a good captain. A great leader.”

Le Bris also addressed the club’s transfer strategy heading into the new season, signaling a more conservative approach compared to last year’s extensive squad overhaul. Sunderland signed 14 players ahead of their Premier League return, but so far this summer they have only secured the signing of experienced full back Thomas Meunier on a free transfer from Lille.

“It’s going to be quiet. Under the radar, right? Because I think that we are working hard behind the scenes, and it’s really important to be quiet because otherwise, it’s a mess,” Le Bris explained. He added that the current transfer window will likely differ from the previous one due to the need for fewer new acquisitions: “We had to sign 14 new players. That won’t be the case this year. We’ll see what will happen.”

Separately, defender Lutsharel Geertruida has confirmed that he will not be returning to Sunderland following his season-long loan from RB Leipzig. The 26-year-old Netherlands international made 30 appearances across all competitions during his time with the Black Cats, and despite speculation about a permanent transfer, he will remain with his parent club.
