Canberra’s political, media, and business communities gathered last night for the annual Midwinter Ball, an event held in the Main Hall of Parliament House. Since its inception in 2000, the ball has raised over $5 million to support various charities.

The event drew senior representatives from all federal parliamentary parties, including the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader, alongside corporate leaders and members of the press gallery. Attendance was capped at 640 guests, maintaining the ball’s exclusive nature.

Throughout the evening, politicians participated in a charity auction by offering personal experiences as prizes. Notable items included a tennis match with the Prime Minister at The Lodge and a session involving a floating sauna and cold plunge with Senator David Pocock. Bids for these opportunities reached thousands of dollars, reflecting strong support from attendees.

Entertainment has been a longstanding feature of the Midwinter Ball, with past performers including Jessica Mauboy, David Campbell, Grace Knight, Mental As Anything, Roy and HG, and Jean Kittson. However, this year’s event placed greater emphasis on fundraising activities by auctioning politicians’ time.

Jane Norman, president of the press gallery, expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from political figures and business leaders who contribute generously to the cause. The Midwinter Ball continues to serve as a key annual occasion where Australia’s leadership and media come together in a formal setting to raise funds for charity and foster community relations within parliamentary Canberra.
