Durham maintained their strong position in the County Championship Division Two after the opening day of their match against Gloucestershire, who lie at the bottom of the table. A five-wicket haul from Kasey Aldridge, supported by early breakthroughs from Brydon Carse, helped restrict Gloucestershire to 137 runs. Durham replied with 100 for three at stumps, trailing by 37 runs as bad light ended play prematurely.

Durham, who remain the only unbeaten side in the country’s top-tier red-ball competition, looked to extend their 30-point lead in Division Two and strengthen their bid for promotion back to Division One. After winning the toss and opting to bowl, Carse quickly made an impact by bowling Joe Phillips to give Durham an ideal start. Matthew Potts soon added to the pressure, catching Cameron Bancroft at first slip following a loose drive.

Carse continued his effective spell, removing Miles Hammond to leave Gloucestershire struggling at 13 for three. Despite early setbacks, James Bracey and Ollie Price combined well to stabilise the innings, taking the score past fifty as they took advantage of scoring opportunities. However, Aldridge then made significant inroads, claiming the wickets of Price and Tommy Boorman in quick succession.

Potts further disrupted the visitors’ middle order by dismissing Daz Ahmed, while Aldridge completed his five-wicket haul by removing Essex loanee Mitch Killeen and Bracey, who was dismissed lbw after compiling a resilient half-century — his sixth this season. Gloucestershire’s innings was wrapped up with JT Langridge caught at point, and they were all out for 137.

Durham’s response began shakily as both Alex Lees and Ben McKinney fell cheaply, the former caught behind off Langridge and the latter edging a short ball from Ahmed. Will Rhodes and David Bedingham then steadied the innings, with Bedingham continuing his strong form by reaching a run-a-ball half-century before tea. He was particularly aggressive against Ahmed, striking four boundaries in one over.

Gloucestershire struck again when Langridge, enjoying an impressive debut, had Rhodes caught at first slip. Shortly afterward, with both sides poised for further action, bad light brought an early end to the day’s play, resulting in the loss of 26 overs.

Durham will resume day two in a commanding position as they seek to build on their unbeaten streak and maintain their hold on the top spot in Division Two. Gloucestershire, at the foot of the standings, will be aiming to mount a strong reply as they look to move away from the relegation zone.
