Leam Richardson, manager of Reading Football Club, has pledged significant improvement for his team ahead of the next season following their recent 1-0 defeat to Doncaster Rovers. The loss leaves Reading five points shy of the play-off positions with only three games remaining in the current campaign, effectively ending their hopes of promotion this season.
Speaking after the match, Richardson acknowledged the challenges facing his side but expressed confidence in their ability to progress. “It’s my job now to figure out how we get better and, this time next season, I know we will be in a lot better shape,” he said, emphasizing a forward-looking approach as the club prepares for the offseason.
Doncaster’s victory was secured by a goal from captain Owen Bailey, who scored his 16th goal of the season. The goal proved vital as it extended Doncaster’s lead to six points above the relegation zone, providing some breathing room with only a handful of matches left. Despite this, Doncaster’s manager, Grant McCann, voiced frustration over the team’s position in the league standings.
McCann lamented missed opportunities earlier in the season, which have left his side outside the play-off contention. “If we picked up six points from the last two games that I fancied us to win, we’d be sitting seven or eight points off the playoffs with four games to go,” he said. “I said to the players that I’ve never been so disappointed in all my managerial career leading into this game.”
With Reading unable to bridge the gap to the top six and Doncaster focused on consolidating their league position, both clubs are now turning their attention to the final fixtures of the campaign. Reading aims to use the remaining matches as a stepping stone toward a stronger campaign next season, while Doncaster seeks to secure their status and, possibly, fight for a higher finish than currently projected.
