A 23-year-old learner driver has been banned from driving after being recorded traveling at 104 mph in a 50 mph zone near Chesterfield. Josh Simkins, who was behind the wheel of a Volkswagen Golf, admitted to speeding during a hearing at Southern Derbyshire magistrates’ court this week. The incident took place in March at 2:22 p.m.

Simkins, of Grassmoor, Derbyshire, told the court he had no explanation for his excessive speed, stating, “No reason why. No excuse.” The prosecution, represented by Julie Moores, highlighted that the speed was too excessive to warrant a simple awareness course. At the time of the offense, Simkins held an expired provisional driving licence and had no prior endorsements.

The court imposed a driving ban for one year on Simkins. Additionally, he was ordered to pay a fine totaling £298, which includes court costs. The payment is set to be deducted from his state benefits.
