Sunderland Football Club has denied reports linking them with a transfer for French attacking midfielder Noé Lebreton. Contrary to earlier speculation, sources within the club have confirmed that Lebreton is not currently on their recruitment radar.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who plays for Dutch Eredivisie side NEC Nijmegen, joined the club from French Ligue 2 team Caen last summer. During his debut season in the Netherlands, Lebreton made a significant impact by scoring seven goals and providing six assists in 27 league appearances. His contributions helped NEC secure a third-place finish and a spot in the Champions League third qualifying round.

The reported interest in Lebreton was seen as credible by some observers due to Sunderland’s recent dealings with NEC. Last summer, Sunderland signed goalkeeper Robin Roefs from the Dutch club. Roefs went on to impress in his first season in English football and earned a call-up to the Netherlands squad for the World Cup.

Lebreton’s age, potential, and playing profile have been cited as characteristics that align with Sunderland’s recruitment strategy under sporting director Florent Ghisolfi, which focuses on developing young talent. However, club representatives have emphasized that no approach has been made to NEC concerning the midfielder.

NEC’s head coach, Régis Le Bris, has several senior central defenders in his squad, lessening the likelihood that Sunderland would be seeking reinforcements in his position group. This context further supports Sunderland’s statement that Lebreton is not a target at this time.

The clarification from Sunderland puts to rest rumors about imminent transfer activity involving Lebreton, although the midfielder’s strong performances in the Eredivisie mean he is likely to remain on the radar of various clubs across Europe.
