England Under-21s coach Lee Carsley is closely monitoring the progress of Arsenal teenager Max Dowman, who is attracting attention from the senior national team setup. The 16-year-old midfielder is scheduled to feature for the England Under-19 squad in a friendly against the Republic of Ireland on Friday and is seen as a rising talent within the national ranks.
Dowman has reportedly been on the radar of senior team coach Thomas Tuchel well in advance of the recent World Cup, with suggestions that he may soon be invited to join the senior squad for training sessions at St George’s Park. This development comes amid several senior players withdrawing from England’s Nations League fixtures, including Declan Rice, Cole Palmer, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo, and Tino Livramento. Carsley acknowledged the potential of Dowman but emphasized the importance of managing his progression carefully. “Max is an outstanding talent, the timing and the balance of when he comes to the Under-21s is inevitable,” Carsley said. “We have to be patient. Dowman is also in contention to break a longstanding Premier League record held by former England international Theo Walcott. Walcott debuted at the top-flight level at 17 years and 75 days old, nearly 20 years ago. Dowman has until March 30 to surpass that milestone.
